On April 28, 2008, Council approved the 2008 Property Tax Bylaw which sets the tax rates for both residential and non-residential taxes for 2008. As you may know, The City remits almost half of the residential tax it collects to The Province. This year however, the Government of Alberta raised The City’s 2008 provincial tax requisition by 8.9% over last year-- an extra $44.1 million! Although Council had committed to hold the tax rate at 4.5% for City services and infrastructure needs, the increase to the Provincial portion required a revised combined rate of 5.4% in order to meet our Provincial obligations and to continue to provide the services that we promised Calgarians. Mayor Bronconnier has been ardently pursuing a larger share of the property tax pie that The City collects and I strongly support his efforts.

Property tax bills were mailed out May 23 and are due June 30. A penalty of 7% will be assessed on any unpaid balance on July 1, 2008. (Consider the Tax Installment Payment Plan – TIPP – to pay monthly).
